executive summary

GXO identified an opportunity to transform the brewery-to-distribution-centre shuttle operation for Grupa Żywiec in Elbląg. Drawing on its operational expertise, GXO defined the requirements for a faster, safer and more consistent unloading process, then led the transformation from operational analysis through implementation.

Working as three partners and innovators, GXO, Grupa Żywiec and Joloda Hydraroll deployed a Moving Floor automated trailer unloading solution tailored to the site. Joloda Hydraroll provided the technology and technical support, while Grupa Żywiec contributed the customer and production perspective needed to align the solution with the brewery logistics environment.

The implementation reduced unloading time from 30 minutes to 2 minutes, lowered labour and equipment requirements, improved safety and consistency, and achieved a 95-98% reduction in product and pallet damage.

the opportunity: redesigning the unloading process

At the GXO-operated distribution centre for Grupa Żywiec in Elbląg, palletised beer products travel on a short, 5-kilometre shuttle route between the brewery and the distribution centre. The existing unloading process relied on pallet trucks operating inside semi-trailers, supported by forklifts for receiving goods and supplying production lines.

As volumes increased, GXO identified an opportunity to redesign this important process. The goal was to create an integrated operating model that could maintain throughput while reducing manual handling, vehicle movements, labour dependency and the risk of product and pallet damage.

GXO defined the operational requirements

Based on its analysis of the operation, GXO established the requirements for a solution that would:

  • Reduce dependence on pallet trucks during unloading

  • Improve unloading speed and consistency at the distribution centre

  • Lower manual handling requirements

  • Reduce product and pallet damage

  • Support safer operations by limiting interaction between people and equipment

  • Integrate into the existing shuttle process without disrupting throughput

  • Provide reliable local technical and after-sales support

a GXO-led transformation

GXO led the transformation by connecting operational needs with the right technology. The team carried out detailed operational analysis, reviewed established installations and worked with site stakeholders to validate the proposed approach. This ensured that technology selection remained anchored in measurable operational goals and the realities of the Elbląg site.

Grupa Żywiec and GXO aligned the new process with the requirements of the brewery and distribution operation. Joloda Hydraroll then worked closely with GXO to adapt the technology to the defined requirements and site conditions. Open, transparent and constructive dialogue supported the implementation throughout the project.

the solution: automated trailer unloading

The partners deployed Joloda Hydraroll’s Moving Floor Automated Trailer Unloading System. The implementation included:

  • 1 unloading dock
  • 2 purpose-built Moving Floor semi-trailers
  • Integrated into the existing brewery-to-distribution-centre shuttle operation.

The system automatically transfers palletised beer from the semi-trailer to an unloading table at the distribution centre. This removes the need for pallet truck operations inside the vehicle and creates a controlled, repeatable unloading process.

MF Palletised Beverage Unloading

how the solution works

Automated Unloading: The Moving Floor mechanism transfers palletised loads directly from the semi-trailer to the unloading table.

Purpose-built Trailers: 2 dedicated semi-trailers were designed to seamlessly operate with the Automated Unloading System.

Integrated Unloading Table: The table receives goods directly from the trailer, supporting controlled load movement.

Operational Compatibility: The solution supports continuous shuttle movements while retaining the existing transport model.

the impact: faster, safer and more consistent operations

The transformation delivered measurable improvements across the brewery-to-distribution-centre shuttle process.

Faster Unloading

Unloading time fell from 30 minutes to 2 minutes, improving efficiency at the receiving end of the operation.

Reduced Manual Handling

The system eliminated pallet truck activity inside the semi-trailer during unloading, reducing manual intervention.

Improved Safety

Reducing interaction between people, pallet trucks and forklifts helped lower the risk of incidents and collisions during unloading.

partnership as an innovation model

This project demonstrates how operational leadership, customer insight and specialist technology can combine to deliver practical innovation. GXO identified the opportunity, defined what the operation needed and led the transformation. Grupa Żywiec helped ensure the solution supported the brewery logistics environment while Joloda Hydraroll translated the requirements into a tailored technology deployment and provided technical and after-sales support.

Together, the 3 partners created a solution designed for the demands of a high-volume brewery logistics operation. The result is a faster, safer and more efficient unloading process that supports long-term operational performance.
