Container unloading is the process of removing cargo from a container. Industry professionals also call it ‘container destuffing', ‘unstuffing’, 'devanning containers' or ‘container stripping’.

There are two main types of container unloading:

  • Full container load (FCL) destuffing: which entails unloading a container with goods destined for a single consignee;
  • Less than container load (LCL), which involves coordinating and segregating cargo carefully from a single container to several consignees and is more complex and time-consuming because of the cargo’s mixed nature.

What is the container unloading process?

Traditionally, operators perform container unloading manually. Container unloading itself is relatively straightforward:

  1. the container is placed securely in a designated unloading area, usually a loading dock. Personnel document the shipment’s arrival at the destination port, conduct integrity checks on customs seals and prepare equipment to unload the container;
  2. personnel remove the seals and open the container doors. Following a pre-planned order, they remove the goods carefully, using a ‘last in first out’ approach, with heavy loads being removed last because they were loaded first into the container. Often, personnel use pallet jacks and straps to unload the cargo manually;
  3. personnel check the goods against the shipping manifest (or packing list) to make sure all the listed items are there and undamaged. They then sort and prepare them. This can mean staging the goods for customs clearance and transportation to customers’ premises, freight container stations or warehouses;
  4. personnel inspect the container for damage before returning it for further use. They’ll remove any debris or packing material so the container is clean for the next shipping operation.
